Philip Revell talks about Sustaining Dunbar
Philip Revell is from Sustaining Dunbar in East Lothian http://sustainingdunbar.org/
In spring of 2008 Sustaining Dunbar was just in its infancy and one of the first things started was a village bakery. The family who had previously run the local bakery had failed to sell it as an opportunity for 2 years. So Sustaining Dunbar looked at how it might be used as a community asset.
Found a more suitable commercial building and looked at setting this up as a bakery and cafe. After a few months of planning applied to the lottery fund. More than just an ecological concern this was to be much more and seen as a community resource and social enterprise.
Finally acquired the original bakery and planning consent applied for, hope to open in Spring 2011.
A local farmer has shown interest in growing wheat for the bakery which would be locally millled and other farm produce could also be made available in the shop.
Looking ahead towards a community buy out for the shop and also looking at renewable energy which would generate substaintial income into the community and a real investment for the future.
