Linking things up
There was lots of really interesting stuff during yesterday's Scottish Gathering and references to several things that you can link to on the tinternet...
Peter McCall made reference to a talk that took place earlier in the week in Edinburgh by Richard Wilkinson, author of the spirit level. The talk was organised by Friends of the Earth Scotland and the podcast and presentation can be downloaded from the FoES website and their blog site...
Another thing that came up during the day was how to measure the carbon impact of various initiatives and there's a great new book out which help you get your head round the relative carbon impact of 100 different things ranging from a hand dryer to the World Cup. How Bad are Bananas by Mike Berners-Lee is a must read if you are interested in your carbon footprint...
The Dunbar Community Bakery presentation was also really interesting, in particular the community share issue and the other benefits that have come from that including one of their shareholders buying the property. They are also looking at several different social enterprises being developed as a spin off from the core group which got me a thinking about another really good book from a few years ago. Social Enterprise in Anytown, by John Pearce gives a great overview of how things might work in the future...
